How do I know when it’s time to go up in weight?

It’s a great question — and the fact that you’re asking it means you’re ready to grow. Whether you’re new to lifting or you’ve been in the game for a while, knowing when to push the weight a little more is key to progress. Here’s how to tell when it’s time to level up:

1. Your current weight feels too comfortable

If you’re breezing through your reps and barely breaking a sweat, it’s a sign. Workouts should challenge you — not crush you, but definitely push you. If you’re finishing a set and thinking, “I could’ve done 5 more,” it’s probably time to grab the next weight up.

2. You’re consistently hitting more reps than programmed

Let’s say the workout calls for 8 reps, and you’re pumping out 10–12 every time with ease. That’s your body telling you, “Hey — I’ve adapted!” When your strength increases, your weight should follow.

Be proud of yourself! You’re hitting new heights in your fitness journey and continuously progressing in your lifts. If you’re working 1:1 with a coach, they’ll be able to help you grow and keep increasing your weights, reps, and sets. That’s the true beauty about customized programming. 3. Your form is solid

Form always comes first. If you’re consistently lifting with good technique, especially under fatigue, that’s a green light. Never sacrifice form just to chase a heavier number — but if your mechanics are locked in, you’re ready to test a bit more. If you’re working with a coach, they’ll be there to keep you accountable for maintaining good form for safety and help with any modifications to keep you progressing!

4. You’re not feeling as sore or challenged post-workout

Feeling less fatigue or soreness after sessions using the same weights may mean your body has adapted. That’s a good thing — and a sign it’s time to add a little more to keep progressing.

If you’re noticing more fatigue than normal, it could mean a couple things: your body is telling you it’s ready for a delaod! Take a break from the gym or lower the load or reps. It could also mean that your body is in need of a different type of recovery and it’s time to book a Fascial Stretch Therapy appointment, read about it here!

5. You’re mentally ready

Sometimes it’s not about the body — it’s about the mind. If you’ve been holding yourself back out of fear or habit, trust your strength. You might be stronger than you think.

Going heavier doesn’t mean maxing out every day. It means intentionally challenging yourself in a way that builds strength, confidence, and resilience. At MSP, we’ll always help you find that sweet spot — where growth lives.

Next time you’re tempted to grab the same dumbbells or plates… pause and ask yourself:
“Is this still challenging me?”

Chances are, you’re ready to level up.
